J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. says it will modify the terms of $70 billion in troubled, mostly adjustable-rate mortgages it holds.
The New York bank inherited many of the loans as part of its September purchase of a failed competitor, Washington Mutual Inc. (NYSE:WM), and its move will cover as many as 400,000 borrowers. J.P. Morgan said Friday the borrowers will be moved into loans carrying lower interest rates, smaller principal amounts or other more-affordable terms, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The move came shortly after the bank received a $25 billion capital infusion from the U.S. Treasury's program to strengthen financial institutions and get credit flowing.
"Our goal in doing this was to come up with something that we think will lead the industry in helping as much as possible on this issue," said J.P. Morgan executive Charles Scharf.
John Taylor, chief executive of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, said the action was "a gutsy move on their part. They are bending over backward to try to reach out to these people."

Love your site. So much divercity. You do all this yourself? I still have my Primal Park LP. It's great to see you kept moving. My question is why so little information about the ONLY (Mondo Rock) that there is next to nothing about you guys. I watched the band many times. "SUN" was the rhythm section of Mondo R. Your playing and presence made it impossible for anyone to deny, still even on Ross Wilson's page, there is no info. Why is this? It seems to me that Primal Park has been pimped. I can say this. I never went to another show after you left. Well.. on show in Melbourne. Shame they couldn't find an equal to fill your shoes. Believe me there was no drive. The rest is pop bullshit. Still you guys are ignored. From me and so many, we came to see the band. I cannot forget The Kew Hotel.. Most nights I was in the front or dancing. To this day, I have not seen another Australian Band to match the individual creativity. Now 56, I travel. You, my friend are World class. I suppose like many artists the fact that your place has been tucked aside is they or whoever feel threatened. The World is a big place. Though we are all tiny, there are shining stars. Great to see some new languages appearing in the guest book. I mean... look below.. The "Ya tut KLUDA" business.. Don't know what it means. So if ya gunna post the mungrel. Ga on mate.
